What is Vitamin C good for?

Vitamin C

Every now and then we take one of our ingredients and explain what this ingredient is good for. In this blog we will explain everything you need to know about Vitamin C.

Antioxidant

Vitamin c, or ascorbic acid, functions as an antioxidant and has many health benefits. Antioxidants protect the body from free radicals and therefore prevent cell-damage. Free radicals are actually harmfull substances from the outside. When too many of these substances enter our body without being stopped, important processes can be disrupted. The body is constantly ‘under attack’ and antioxidants are therefore very important to protect us from free radicals.

Collagen formation

Another important function of vitamin C is that is stimulates the body’s own collagen formation. Collagen is a glue-forming protein that we produce enough of ourselves up to the age of around 25. As we age, the body produces less and less of this protein and thus a shortage arises. This is mainly noticeable in the skin, but also for example in the joints that lose structure and firmness. In the skin it becomes visible in the form of lines and wrinkles.

For this reason, you often come across vitamin C as an ingredient in skincare products. CelioGenix contains a lot of vitamin C, since stimulating your own collagen production in addition to supplementing the deficit is a nice combination for the best results.

How much vitamin C do we need?

Our body is not capable to produce or store this itself (because it is water soluble). Therefore, it is important to receive enough vitamin C for its workings as an antioxidant and for the formation of collagen. But what is enough and what foods contain this vitamin?

The recommended daily amount of vitamin C is 75 milligrams. CelioGenix contains this exact amount in every bottle to make it easy to reach this amount. You can also find vitamin C in red peppers, black berries, oranges, broccoli, kiwis, and strawberries. Please note that many vitamins get lost during cooking, so choose to steam your vegetables instead.

CelioGenix contains 75mg per 50ml bottle. This equals 100% of the recommended daily amount.

The following health claims about vitamin c were subject to extensive research and approved by the EFSA (Europan Food Safety Authority):

What happens if you have a vitamin C shortage?

Keeping track of yout vitamin intake can be difficult and diet without enough fruits and vegetables can lead to a shortage. A long-term severe vitamin C deficiency can cause a reduced resitance, delayed wound healing, scurvy, and internal bleeding. To prevent this and to enjoy the positive effects of vitamin C, it is therefore important to receive the recommenden 75 milligrams.

Is it possible to receive too much vitamin C?

There is no official tolerable upper intake level for adults. The body will take the amount it needs and the rest will simply leave the body. Intestinal problems are, however, a possible consequence if you take more than 2 grams a day. CelioGenix contains the RDA of 75 milligrams
