The Sun, UV & Vitamin D

Good skin care and a healthy life include good knowledge about our greatest friend & enemy: the sun. What exactly is the situation with UV radiation and skin damage, and how does vitamin D contribute to our health? You can read it all in this blog.

The sun and its heat rays

Friend vs. enemy

We owe a lot to it; blooming flowers, the feeling of the first rays of spring and warm summer evenings. Thanks to the sun, we have light, warmth and a habitable planet.

This heat source is also associated with more negative things such as skin burns and even skin cancer. This, of course, has everything to do with Ultraviolet (Uv) radiation. There are three types of UV radiation:

Wavelength

These shapes all have a different wavelength. UV-C has the shortest waves and does not reach the earth, so we are not bothered by this either. We are dealing with A and B. Ultraviolet-A penetrates the skin more easily, but is otherwise weaker.  Burning this is certainly possible, although much more rays are needed over a longer period than with UV-B. Ultraviolet-B is about 1000x stronger and therefore also more dangerous for combustion.

Sun protection

Why is it good to know that both A and B exist? Because sun protection must also be able to stop both types of rays. The skin can burn from both types. The red color that occurs here comes from the widening of blood vessels in the dermis.

Skin damage from UV rays

In addition to reddening and painful skin, too much sun exposure also causes extrinsic skin aging and there is a clear relationship with skin cancer.

Extrinsic skin aging means that the structure and elasticity of the skin deteriorates due to external influences. This has nothing to do with genes and age. UV rays can cause this, just like drinking alcohol, for example.

It doesn’t have to be a hot summer day for UV rays to penetrate the skin and cause damage. This can happen on any normal day, only you will notice it less. For this reason, use an SPF product every day to ward off the radiation. Even when it is cloudy and cold. This way you keep the skin young and healthy!

With this warning we can safely discuss how the sun also benefits our health: namely with the production of vitamin D.

The production of vitamin D

We need Vitamin D for healthy bones, teeth, muscles and for a well-functioning immune system. Besides the fact that we can get this from food such as fatty fish, our body can also produce vitamin D itself thanks to sunlight.

For adults, about 15 to 30 minutes sunlight per day is sufficient to make enough vitamin D. Apply very well after this time, because then it will be harmful to the skin. Your body also no longer makes vitamin d if you spend longer in the sun, so pay attention to proper protection!

CelioGenix contains 100% of the Daily Recommended Amount of vitamin D3 in each 50ml bottle. So make the most of the sun, but with a good SPF. The amount of vitamin D is good ?

Need additional?

Some people need extra vitamin D, for example because they do not make it very well themselves. Young children, for example, need some extra of this for their bones and teeth. Furthermore, people with a lot of pigment in the skin need sunlight for a longer time to make a certain amount of vitamin D than people with very little pigment.

Difference between vitamin D and D3?

It can sometimes be confusing that the terms vitamin D, D2, and D3 are used interchangeably. In principle, ‘D’ is the collective name. D2 is a vegetable vitamin and D3 an animal one. Our body also produces type D3 through sunlight. CelioGenix Beauty Drink also contains vitamin D3, which has a slightly stronger effect than D2.
